Open Mat
No instruction, no curriculum. Mat time to drill whatever you're working on, roll with whoever's there, or ask someone to show you the thing you couldn't get right in class.
What open mat is for
Class teaches you things. Open mat is where they become yours. It runs straight after the 7:30 pm gi class at Seven Hills, so you can stay on after training or come just for this.
There's no set structure. People drill in pairs, roll rounds, work a specific position they got stuck in, or sit and watch. It's the most relaxed room in the week.
Is it for beginners?
Yes, with one caveat: it's more useful once you have a few weeks behind you and something specific you want to practise. On night one you'd mostly be watching.
If you're brand new, start at a Carlingford All Levels class on Monday or Thursday, then add open mat once you've got a couple of positions to work on.
- Gi or no-gi, your choice
- You can decline any round, at any time, without explaining
