The academy
A jiu-jitsu room in Carlingford, not a fight club
Supportive, community-driven and deliberately ego-free. People come from Epping, Eastwood, North Rocks and West Pennant Hills, train for ninety minutes, and go home to their families.
What this place is for
myBJJ Miyazawa exists to teach authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a controlled, supportive room — self-defence, fitness and technique, without the posturing that puts people off martial arts gyms.
Everyone is welcome: absolute beginners who have never done a martial art, hobbyists who train twice a week for twenty years, and competitors. They all train in the same class, and that mix is deliberate. Beginners learn faster next to experienced people, and experienced people get sharper when they have to explain what they're doing.
How we train
- Technique before intensity. Leverage and position do the work. If you need strength to make it happen, you're doing it wrong.
- Ego-free mat. Nobody uses a beginner to feel good about themselves.
- Tap early, train tomorrow. Egos cost training time, and training time is the only thing that makes you better.
- Competing is optional. Most members never compete and progress just fine.
Lineage
Part of the myBJJ Team
Affiliation matters in jiu-jitsu because it tells you where the instruction comes from and who stands behind a rank.

Toshihide “Toshi” Miyazawa
Born near Nagano, Japan, with a degree in Sports Science and a background in judo and sambo alongside jiu-jitsu. 2014 NSW light-weight state champion.

In Toshi's words
Why I opened here
I grew up near Nagano. I have been doing martial arts for as long as I can remember — judo first, then anything I could get my hands on.
It was simply what you did after school. It shaped how I think about almost everything.
Then I moved to Australia in 2005 and found Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I had spent my whole life training. I had never felt anything like it.
Here was an art where the smallest person in the room could control the largest — not through strength, but through angle, timing and patience. I fell in love with it immediately, and I have not stopped since.
I opened in Carlingford because I had already taught here, and I loved the community. These are ordinary, busy people, and that is exactly who jiu-jitsu is for.
Not a fight gym. A place you come to after work, or bring your kids to, and leave better than you arrived.
Safe enough that a nervous beginner comes back for a second class. Honest enough that a black belt still learns something.
Nobody here needs to prove anything to anybody. We put on the gi, we look after our partners, and we get a little bit better together. That is the whole thing.
Professor Yokoyama awarded me my black belt in 2024. I opened the Carlingford academy in February 2026.
