Carlingford · Monday & Thursday

All Levels (Gi)

The traditional jacket, trousers and belt, taught at Carlingford twice a week. This is the main class of the academy and where every beginner starts.

The class lined up along the wall at the start of a gi session

Who it's for

Anyone with no experience at all, alongside people who have been training for years. There is no separate beginners class — adults, teenagers and children train the same session, and Toshi scales the detail to whoever is in front of him.

If you've never done a martial art, this is the class to book. Beginners are shown the fundamentals directly: core positions, escapes, and how to move under someone's weight without panicking. Nobody expects you to keep up with the black belts.

It's also the right class if you're moving from another academy and want to see how positions are taught here.

What a class looks like

Ninety minutes, 7:00 to 8:30 pm. The shape is consistent:

  • Movement warm-up — shrimping, bridging, breakfalls
  • Technique from the front — one position, a few details that make it work
  • Drilling with a partner — slow, no resistance, no winner
  • Positional rounds or open rolling to finish — optional for beginners

What to wear and bring

For a trial: a t-shirt and shorts or trackpants with no pockets or zips. Don't buy a gi until you know you're staying. Once you are, you'll want your own — plus a drink bottle, a towel and thongs for walking off the mat.
